Occasionally the format requirement goes the other way: a portal, plugin or asset pipeline insists on PNG even though your photo is a JPG. This converter decodes the JPG (applying its EXIF rotation, so phone photos stay upright) and re-encodes it as a lossless PNG — a clean, standards-compliant file with no further quality loss.
Worth knowing before you convert: the PNG will be noticeably larger than the JPG, and it will not look any better — the compression that already happened cannot be reversed. What you gain is a file that survives repeated editing and saving without degrading, plus compatibility with PNG-only tools.

Frequently asked questions
Will converting my JPG to PNG improve its quality?
No — and any tool that claims otherwise is misleading you. JPG compression artifacts are baked into the pixels; PNG just stores those pixels without adding new loss. The point of the conversion is compatibility and safe re-editing, not restoration.
Why does anyone need JPG as PNG?
Some uploaders, university portals, and design or game tools only accept PNG. It is also the right intermediate format when you will edit an image repeatedly: unlike JPG, saving a PNG never degrades it further.
Why did the file get bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG threw detail away to compress. Encoding those decoded pixels losslessly simply costs more bytes — commonly 5–10× more. That is normal and not a sign that something went wrong.
Does my photo get transparency now?
The format now supports it, but a converted photo is still fully opaque. To actually make the background transparent, run the result through the background remover — it works in the browser too.
